First Popcorn Friday, October 11th!
When children don't have clothes appropriate for the weather or that fit right, they are often embarrassed and chastised by their peers, leading to lower attendance, lower academic scores, low self-esteem and behavioral problems. Some families are unable to provide some of bare necessities their children need, such as clothing and school supplies. The purpose of the Angels Program is to confidentially match families with the means and desire to help with Sierra Heights students in need of assistance.
Teachers and staff at Sierra Heights help identify children in need of assistance. The school Angels Program coordinator reaches out to the family. If the family is interested in accepting assistance, information on the size and needs of the child are obtained.
Sierra Heights PTSA Angels Program coordinate gathers information on individuals, families and groups interested in helping out in our school community. Angels are asked to commit to three donations of clothing and school supplies throughout the year; generally in the fall, winter/spring and summer.
The PTSA program coordinator matches students with Angels, sends each Angel information regarding donation dates and confidential information with the students age, sizes, preferences, and requests. Before each of the donation dates, the Angel shops for age appropriate requested items, places them in a bag with an assigned number, gift receipts in an envelope, and turns them into the office. The school coordinator collects the donation, files the receipts in case an exchange is needed, and gets the donation into the hands of the student in the program.
Our most recent survey indicated that Angels report spending an average of $100 - $150 per donation. Many of our Angels are thrifty shoppers utilizing big sales, coupons and reward dollars to maximize their donation while minimizing their expense.
Some people also choose to participate in this program as an extended family, or in a group with roommates, co-workers, or another community service program.
Gift receipts are requested in a sealed envelope, labeled with the student identifier number. It's hard to shop for people we don't know and, once in a while, something needs to be exchanged. The school coordinator files all receipts to ensure they are accessible to facilitate any needed exchanges without adding extra burden to the Angel kind enough to provide the donation.
We ask for gift receipts, because the PTSA is a non-profit organization recognized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. As such, your donations are tax deductible on your federal taxes. We want you to have those original receipts for your records!
Absolutely not! We take the privacy of both our Angels and students enrolled extremely serious. Our school coordinator communicates with the families enrolled and our PTSA coordinator communicates with the Angels participating. The two coordinators work together to communicate with their respective groups to acquire needed information and answer questions. Your identity will be respected and kept confidential at all times.
We appreciate participation in the Angels Program at every level! A few ideas on ways to help if you cannot commit to 3 shopping trips:
